Tenormin (Atenolol)

General information

Tenormin is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). It is used to treat angina and hypertension. Also is used to treat or prevent heart attack.

Directions

Use Tenormin at the same time every day before food or going to bed. Take Tenormin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Avoid drinking alcohol and don't take the medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Do not skip doses, as suddenly stopping can make you worse. If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon that you are using this medicine.

Precautions

Take this medication with a full glass of water at the same time daily. Suddenly stopping may make your condition worse. Hypertension often has no symptoms, so you may not even feel that you have high blood pressure. Continue using this medicine as directed. It's obligatory to tell your doctor before the surgeon that you tipple this drug.

Contraindications

High blood pressure, sinus syndrome, atrioventricular block, acute failure, peripheral blood flow disorders, breastfeeding. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have: asthma, diabetes, congestive heart failure, depression, liver or kidney disease.

Possible side effect

An allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, slow heartbeats, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, diarrhea.

Drug interaction

You should not use Tenormin if you are allergic to atenolol, or if you have certain heart conditions such as slow heartbeats, or heart block. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. Don't use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, estrogens, sympathomimetics.

Missed dose

Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

Overdose can cause uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, fainting, bluish-colored fingernails, convulsions. Inform your doctor immediately.

Storage

Store your medicines at room temperature 25 C (77F). Store away from moisture and light.
